King University Wins Messick Sportsmanship Award; Team Sportsmanship Awards Announced

High Point, N.C. – With the completion of the 2014-2015 athletic year, Conference Carolinas is pleased to announce King University as the recipient of the Messick Sportsmanship Award for the first time in school history. The Messick Award is given in recognition of the university’s commitment to providing a quality playing environment for home and visiting fans, players, and staff members.

The winner for the Messick Award, as well as the winner for each sports individual sportsmanship award, is determined at the close of each playing season. Conference coaches and student-athletes work together to vote on the opposing conference members they believe to have best demonstrated the qualities of sportsmanship. Areas for consideration include players and coaches, as well as fans and the general atmosphere of the contests.

Across all sports, King also received the highest number of “Mini Messicks,” eight in all. Of these, four were earned during the spring – baseball, softball, men’s tennis, and men’s volleyball. Belmont Abbey earned the second most awards at 5, adding men’s lacrosse and men’s outdoor track and field for spring. North Greenville swept men’s and women’s golf, bringing the Crusaders 2014-2015 to three. Wrapping up the spring sportsmanship winners, Limestone, Erskine, and Mount Olive earned their first Mini Messick of the year with women’s lacrosse, women’s tennis, and women’s outdoor track and field respectively.

The individual team sportsmanship awards are now in their fourth year, reflecting Conference Carolinas’ commitment to exhibiting and recognizing sportsmanship throughout the conference. As an NCAA Division II member, Conference Carolinas prides itself on creating a positive game environment through sportsmanship to ensure a positive experience for student-athletes and fans alike.
