- It is the student-athletes first year of competition. (Academic sophmores/redshirt freshmen are eligible, as long as took redshirt at same member school.)

- Nominators have the responsibility to make sure all qualifications are met.
Starting in 2017, the NCAA DII M&W XC championships will be changed to allow the top 3 finishers in a region to automatically advance to the championships and the remaining 8 teams to be selected based on defined criteria. For individual selections, the top 2 from each regional not part of a qualifying team will advance. Any individual who finishes in the top 5 at the regional not on a qualifying team will also advance. The remaining 8 individuals would be selected by comparing regional place and strength of region.
