Columbia, S.C. - South Carolina opened its Cross Country team with promise as senior Rebecca Chain and three freshmen, Ashley Evens, Cassity Brewer and Courtney Bowen, led the way. The Gamecocks finished third with 83 points to secure their second straight win over the Clemson Tigers.

"This was a good opener for us," said USC Head Cross Country Coach Stan Rosenthal. "Ashley Evens just missed a PR and Cassity Brewer had a 21 second PR. Rebecca Chain ran well - she showed good fight when she didn't quit in that second mile. All in all it was a good start for us, a good solid effort. I was very pleased with the efforts of the freshmen."

Senior Rebecca Chain started off strong for the Gamecocks and after a slow second mile, she picked up her pace finish ninth with a time of 18:52.

"I went out hard and just chilled in the middle. I was nervous about my finish so I had to push in my last mile to finish strong," Chain said.

South Carolina had four other runners finish in the top 25 including Evens, Brewer, Bowen and junior Callie Rabun.

"As a team, we had a pretty strong race, but we have a ways to go. It was a good learning experience since we are a young team," Chain said.

"Charlotte and College of Charleston both ran well," said Rosenthal.

Charlotte finished first with 35 points followed by the College of Charleston with 60. Ata Jackson of Charlotte claimed the individual title with a time of 18:02.

The Gamecocks are back in action Sat., Sept. 15 at Winthrop in Rock Hill, S.C.
