Lees-McRae Early Joby Hawn Cup Leader Following Fall Season Rankings
High Point, NC> Lees-McRae College has taken an early lead in the Conference Carolinas Joby Hawn Cup with the completion of all the fall sports league championships. The Hawn Cup is awarded to the league member that shows the highest rating of excellence in conference-sponsored sports. The Hawn Cup is tallied after each sport season (fall, winter, & spring) and then awarded each year in honor of former Commissioner H.C. "Joby" Hawn for his many years of service to the former Carolinas Conference.
Conference Carolinas will continue to use the same format that was new for last year, where the Hawn Cup will have a winner for just the women’s sports, a winner for just the men’s sports, and then an overall winner using both the men and women’s combined tallies. Hawn Cup points are awarded in each sport based on the order of regular season finish with bonus points going to the tournament champion (2 bonus points) and runner-up finisher (1 bonus point), based on the number of participating teams in each sport.
For the individual men’s cup, there is a three-way tie for the lead between King, Lees-McRae, and Queens. Each school tallied 16 out of 22 points and had a featured team that either won a conference championship or finished runner-up to help earn bonus points. They were followed closely by Coker, who won the men’s soccer championship to help total 15, and then Erskine and Limestone with 14.5 points each.
Lees-McRae currently leads individually on the women’s side tallying 37 points for a 1.028 rating. The Bobcats initial lead can be credited to their titles in women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. They are followed by Queens with 33 points who won the women’s cross-country title. Belmont Abbey and Mount Olive lurk closely by with 27.5 and 27 points respectively.
For the overall tally, Lees-McRae is also the early leader followed by Queens, King and Mount Olive. Lees-McRae’s overall rating of .914 sets the bar with Queens at .845, King .733, and Mount Olive at .672. Rounding out the schools in order were Belmont Abbey .647, Limestone .603, Erskine .569, Barton .431, Coker .371, Pfeiffer .362, North Greenville 267, and Converse at .222 respectively.
