CONFERENCE CAROLINAS ANNOUNCES BASKETBALL, BASEBALL, SOFTBALL, & MEN’S VOLLEYBALL ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Limestone’s Blue Named Men's Basketball Player of the Week

High Point, N.C. – Limestone College’s Charles Blue has been selected as the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas men's basketball Player of the Week during week number eleven of the 2011-2012 season, this is the second time Blue receives this award as he also received it during week number five. The junior forward from Corpus Christi, Texas dominated the competition in a pair of games this past week as he led Limestone to two crucial Conference Carolinas victories. For the week, he posted averages of 17.5 points and 12.5 rebounds while playing just 49 minutes between the two games. He opened the week coming off the bench against Erskine. In only 23 minutes, Blue delivered 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting, 11 rebounds and knocked down both of his free throws to help secure the Saints largest victory of the season, 74-58, over the Flying Fleet. Against Barton, who was 13-6 overall entering the game, he played 27 minutes and posted his 10th double-double of the season (14th most in the country) as he scored 18 points and ripped down a game-high 14 rebounds. He went 6-of-7 from the foul line, raising his league leading percentage to .892. For the season he is averaging 12.3 points and 9.3 boards, the latter of which is second in Conference Carolinas. Limestone is 11-13 overall on the season and 4-8 in league play.

 

Barton’s Robinson Named Women's Basketball Player of the Week

High Point, N.C. – Barton College’s Jannetta Robinson has been selected as the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas women's basketball Player of the Week during week number eleven of the 2011-2012 season. Senior guard Jannetta Robinson was one rebound shy of a double-double in each of Barton's two key wins this past week. Robinson averaged 17.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists and shot a sizzling 53.3% from the field. Robinson started the week with 18 points, nine rebounds and three assists in a 78-59 East Division win over Queens University of Charlotte on Thursday. Robinson backed it up with 16 points and nine rebounds in a marquee 75-65 road win at league frontrunner Limestone College on Saturday. The victory moved BC into a nearly four-way tie for first place (based upon all four teams having two losses). The Willard, N.C. products weekly result was well over her yearly average of 11.3 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. Barton is 14-6 overall on the season and 9-2 in league play.

 

Mount Olive’s Mercurio Named Baseball Player of the Week

 

 High Point, N.C.> Mount Olive College’s Mike Mercurio has been selected as the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas Baseball Player of the Week during week number one in the 2012 season. Shortstop Mike Mercurio went 8-for-12 in nationally fifth-ranked Mount Olive’s three-game sweep over Lenoir-Rhyne and set a modern-day school record for most runs batted in by a leadoff batter with seven RBI in the final game of the series. After an RBI-single and a two-run single, Mercurio capped his four-hit day with a grand slam home run to help punctuate the Trojans’ 16-1 victory. In the series opener, Mercurio went 3-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored and one RBI as Mount Olive rallied from a three-run deficit for a 9-5 win. He also scored two runs and drove in a run to help the Trojans rally from a 4-0 deficit for a 7-6 victory. Mercurio, who was also 4-for-4 in stolen bases in the series, compiled a .714 on-base percentage to reach base 10 times in 14 plate appearances, including all five plate appearances in the series opener. Mount Olive currently stands at 3-0 overall on the season.

 

 

Barton’s Norville Named Baseball Pitcher of the Week

 

High Point, N.C.> Barton College’s Kyle Norville has been selected as the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas Baseball Pitcher of the Week during week number one in the 2012 season. Junior left-handed Kyle Norville tossed Barton College's first shutout in nearly two years with an impressive two-hit complete game in a 6-0 victory over perennial power Kutztown University on Friday night at historic Fleming Stadium. Norville allowed just two hits and one walk over seven innings against a powerful Golden Bear squad that returned six of its seven batters that hit over .300 in 2011. The 6-foot-4 Norville recorded four consecutive strikeouts during the contest. The Tarboro, N.C., native only faced two batters over the minimum against a KU program that went to the DII "World Series" in 2010. Barton currently stands at 2-2 overall in the season. 

 

 

Barton’s Street Named Softball Player of the Week

 

High Point, N.C.> Barton College’s Kendall Street has been selected as the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas Softball Player of the Week during week number one in the 2012 season. Senior Kendall Street had one of Barton's most impressive games in years tossing a one-hit, 10-strikeout shutout from the pitcher's circle while offensively going 3-for-4 with two home runs, eight RBI, and four runs scored in a 19-0 victory over Virginia University of Lynchburg. Street’s big performance helped Barton start 3-0 on the season with a trio of wins on Saturday in the Shaw University Round Robin at the Walnut Creek Complex. Street batted .417 for the week with nine total RBI, five runs, two doubles, two home runs and one stolen base. On the mound, the Bertie, N.C. product allowed only one hit over 5.0 innings and had 10 strikeouts in the near no-hitter. Barton currently stands at 3-0 overall in the season.



 

Barton’s Pittman Named Softball Pitcher of the Week

 

 

High Point, N.C.> Barton College’s Autumm Pittman has been selected as the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas Softball Pitcher of the Week during week number one in the 2012 season. Sophomore Autumn Pittman had two scoreless appearances for Barton College on Saturday in the Shaw University Round Robin as the Lady Bulldogs went 3-0 on the day. Pittman got BC off to a great start with a 12-0 complete-game, two-hit shutout over Saint Augustine's College in the squad’s season-opener. She tied her career-high single game strikeout record with 11 K's in the five-inning win. Pittman added a scoreless inning of relief with two more strikeouts in the Bulldogs 8-2 win against Fayetteville State a couple hours later. The Pikeville, N.C. product has a perfect 0.00 ERA to start the season. Barton currently stands at 3-0 overall in the season.

 

 

Pfeiffer’s Moore Named Men’s Volleyball Player of the Week

 

High Point, N.C.> Pfeiffer University’s Quentin Moore has been selected as the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas men’s volleyball Player of the Week during week number two in the 2012 season. Quentin Moore began his collegiate career with a 35-kill effort in a 2-1 start to the 2012 season for the Falcons. Hosting Ball State in the season-opener, Moore put down a match-high 12 kills hitting .258 with a team-high six digs, a solo block and three block assists. In the league opener at Barton, the Richmond, VA native hit a whopping .583 with nine kills adding four more digs, another solo block and block assist. Moore led the Falcons to a team hitting percentage of .344 in the conference road victory. Hosting King on Saturday, Moore continued his early dominant play with his third-consecutive match-high in 14 kills hitting .409. This time, Moore added his second match-high in the digs department with 10 for volleyball's version of a double-double. Moore added two solo blocks in the second-consecutive league sweep. For the week, Moore put down 35 kills in his first three matches averaging 3.89 kills/set with a .369 hitting percentage. The sophomore outside hitter also put up 2.22 digs/set, contributing to 4.78 points/set. Moore and the Falcons are back on the hardwood over the next two weeks at Mount Olive, at Eastern Mennonite in a tri-match with Philly Biblical, and home to Limestone before heading to Lees-McRae. Pfeiffer is 2-1 overall on the season and 2-0 in league play.
