ANDERSON
UNIVERSITY WINS JOBY HAWN CUP
AWARD
Thomasville, NC> Anderson University has been awarded the annual Joby Hawn Cup, in recognition of excellence in all conference-sponsored sports. The Hawn Cup is awarded each year in honor of former Commissioner H.C. "Joby" Hawn for his many years of service to the former Carolinas Conference. Hawn Cup points are awarded in each sport based on the order of regular season finish with bonus points going to the tournament champion and runner-up finishers, based on the number of participating teams in each sport. Men's & women's golf and men's and women's cross country are the only CVAC sponsored sports in which points are determined by conference tournament finish.
Anderson University earned the 2006-07 Hawn Cup with a member institution high 0.547 rating. This is the first time that Anderson has won the award. The Trojans have previously finished twice at third (03-04, 04-05), three times at fifth (02-03, 01-02, 05-06), and twice at seventh (99-00, 00-01) in the overall Joby Hawn Cup title history. This is also the first time a South Carolina member has ever claimed the honor.
Anderson won the award highlighted by a regular season championship in men's tennis and tournament championship titles in women's cross-country, men's cross-country, and men's tennis. They also received bonus points with tournament runner-up finishes in women's basketball and baseball.
Limestone College finishes second just shy of Anderson scoring a 0.541 rating. This was the second consecutive year that Limestone set their personal best finish moving up from the sixth spot last year. They had never finished above tenth in any season before that. Limestone also tied Anderson this year with the biggest improvement, as both teams moved up four total places overall from last year.
Last years award winner Pfeiffer University fell to third place. The Falcons totaled a 0.509 rating this year. Rounding out the schools in order were Anderson, Limestone, Pfeiffer, Queens, Belmont Abbey, Mount Olive, Barton, Coker, St. Andrews, Lees-McRae, and Erskine respectively. Because all CVAC schools do not compete in all of the sports the league sponsors, the Hawn Cup is based on a percentage of the total points a school can earn plus any tournament bonus points. Anderson earned a total of 101.5 points out of a possible 185.5 points for a rating of .547. Second-place Limestone came in a .541 (110/203.5), and Pfeiffer was third at .509 (103.5/203.5).
The conference name will be changed to Conference Carolinas as of June 1, 2007. Thus Anderson University is the last member to attain the CVAC Hawn Cup.
