Barton's Jonathan Burke Named Men's Golf Player of the Month; Takes Award for Second Time this Season
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Friday, February 29, 2008
Thomasville, N.C.> Barton College's Jonathan Burke has been selected as the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas men's golf Player of the Month for the month of February in the 2007-08 season. Jonathon also was awarded the honor in October during men's golf fall season. Barton College junior Jonathan Burke from Goldsboro, N.C., put together what 11th-year Barton head coach John Hackney and other coaches called one of the most amazing rounds they had ever seen last week in the Pfeiffer/Old North State Invitational. With winds blowing 25-35 mph off Badin Lake at the Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point, the reigning conference champion birdied five of his first six holes and six of his first eight to make the turn at 6-under 30 in Monday's first round. With the course record of 7-under 65 in his sights on the part-72, 7,100-yard layout, he doubled the 10th hole, but birdied the 11th. He bogey 14 and 15, but stuck his approach to a foot on the 16th for another birdie and sank a 23-foot putt for birdie on the par-5 finishing hole. His round of 69 in the wind included a remarkable 9 birdies on 18 holes and gave him the first-round lead! The field averaged 82.74 for the first round and he had one of only two rounds under par. On the second day, the wind blew just as hard and temperatures with the wind chill were in the upper 30s. Burke made two birdies and an eagle but suffered two triples and a double to shoot 79. His 148 total was good for a second-place tie and helped Barton finish third of 12 teams. He made 11 birdies and one eagle in 36 holes. Methodist, ranked No. 1 in NCAA D-III, won the team title and their top golfer, Nick Bova, shot 72-70--142 to claim medalist honors. For the year, Burke has played 12 rounds and has a scoring average of 74.0 for the Bulldogs, ranked 25th this month in the Golf World/NIKE Coaches Poll.
