HIGH POINT, N.C. – Belmont Abbey College's Julia Otranto and University of Mount Olive's Malak Kafi have been named the Conference Carolinas Women’s Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for meets held Nov. 29 - Dec. 3, the Conference announced today.
A senior from Asheboro, N.C., Otranto opened up her indoor track season with strong performances at the JDL College Kickoff in Winston-Salem, N.C. this weekend. Competing in the 800-meter dash and 4x400-meter relay, she logged two Top-10 finishes on a Division I-heavy field. Otranto earned a sixth-place finish in the 800m dash with a time of 2:26:46 to rank her first in the conference in the 800-meter dash. Otranto also helped her team to a seventh-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay.
On the field, Kafi, who hails from High Point, N.C., started her junior campaign in style at the Appalachian State Open by setting the University of Mount Olive school record in the long jump, while also exceeding the national provisional qualifying mark with a leap of 5.68m (18'7.75"). In a competitive field of athletes, Kafi prevailed to win the meet and now holds the top mark in the conference and the eighth-best in Division II.

Brittney Augisitin (Lees-McRae) ran 7.53 seconds in the 55-meter dash and 42.88 seconds in the 300-meter dash
Bree Teasley (Emmanuel) ran 7.85 seconds in the 60-meter dash and 25.79 seconds in the 200-meter dash
Also nominated for Women’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week:
Sariah Dempaire-Salomon (Lees-McRae) set a new Lees-McRae indoor record of 11.63 meters in the shot put in her first collegiate meet
Kelsey Poole (Barton) earned qualifying marks to the conference meet with a pair of 10th-place finishes in the weight throw (personal-best 13.55 meters) and shot put (10.78 meters)
