HIGH POINT, N.C. - University of Mount Olive's women's cross country/track & field athlete Leah Hanle has been named the Conference Carolinas Female Athlete of the Year for 2018-19, the Conference announced today. Hanle becomes the first UMO athlete to win the Female Athlete of the Year since Samantha Mitchell in 2007-08.
Hanle, a psychology major from Lichtenstein, Germany, collected numerous awards during her junior campaign, competing in cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field for UMO during 2018-19. In addition to individual achievements, Hanle was a member of three Conference Carolinas championship teams in 2018-19 with the UMO women's cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field teams winning titles,
During cross country season, Hanle was earned All-America status by finishing seventh at the NCAA Division II National Championship. Hanle would also be named NCAA Division II Southeast Region Runner of the Year, NCAA Division II All-Region and first team All-Conference Carolinas.
Hanle continued her success during indoor season, picking up All-America honors in the 3000 meter run (3rd-place) and 5000 meter run (3rd-place) at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championships. Hanle would would win the Conference Carolinas Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Year after taking titles in the 5000 meter run and 800 meter, while finishing second in the mile run.
Hanle concluded the year with dominance during outdoor season, picking up All-America status in the 10,000 meter run (2nd-place) and 5000 meter run (3rd-place). Hanle was tabbed the Division II Women's Outdoor Southeast Region Track Athlete of the Year by USTFCCCA after earning All-Region honors in the 5000 and 10,000 meter runs and the steeplechase.
